The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is warning taxpayers to beware of a recent scam where some Canadians are receiving a letter fraudulently identified as coming from the CRA and asking for personal information. The letter is not from the CRA.

Starting on September 30, 2008, you can sign up to reduce the number of telemarketing calls you receive and to maintain your personal privacy. In 2006, the federal government passed a law allowing for the creation of a National Do Not Call List (DNCL) that all telemarketers must respect. When you sign up to have your cellular, home phone or fax number, companies making unsolicited marketing or sales calls can no longer contact you.

Phishing is a term coined by computer hackers, who use e-mail to fish the Internet hoping to "hook" recipients into giving them logins, passwords and/or other sensitive information. In all these scams, the phisher first impersonates a legitimate company. In a typical scam, the phisher instructs recipients to click on a convenient link (e.g. a file or document number) to receive or provide information that can then be used by phishers to access the recipient's sensitive personal or business information.
